Kilim rugs are some of the most beautiful and spectacular works of art, but like all other rugs, they are made to be used and walked on. Kilim rugs can be very durable and strong. That being said, special attention and care is needed to maintain and clean them. It is highly recommended not to use harsh detergents or harsh cleaning, and instead use these easy ways to clean your kilim rug at home.

vacuum cleaning

Be sure to use a good vacuum with the correct setting for regular cleaning, making sure to vacuum both sides. Never use the highest setting for vacuuming. Never use a dryer or washing machine to clean a kilim rug. The best place to clean and wash a kilim rug is outside on grass or gravel in cold water. As you do this make sure not to wash the kilim rug on a flat surface, the water needs to be able to drain to avoid soaking the kilim and fading the colors. As a detergent, use a mild natural soap or baby shampoo to clean the mat.

Be careful not to vacuum over the edges of a kilim rug.

Cleaning

If colors fade over time, use a half vinegar, half cold water solution on the kilim rug. Using a very soft brush, brush both sides of the rug, then rinse under cold water. After washing the rug, place it outside to dry in the shade, making sure to rotate it so it dries evenly. It is highly recommended to turn the rug over to avoid any sun damage if the rug takes some time to dry in the sun.

In the event that your kilim rug does have a stain or an accidental spill, be sure to treat that stain immediately. Be sure to immediately blot the stain to remove as much of the liquid or substance as possible. Start at the very edge of the stain and move towards the center of the stain to prevent it from spreading further. When you've gotten as much of the stain out as possible, place a shallow bowl with a rim that's slightly larger than the stain and set it underneath.

Using cool, clean water, rinse and dilute the stain as much as possible. Be sure to flatten the kilim rug and then blot the liquid until the stain is gone. Then, to dry the affected area, you can use a hair dryer on a very low or cold setting, so that it does not enlarge the affected area.

If all this does not work, it is best to seek a professional or a cleaning service. When choosing a cleaning service you should be aware of a few things. First, don't take the rug directly to the dry cleaner. Dry cleaners can use harsh chemicals that can damage your carpet. Look for a professional cleaning service that has experience and knowledge of kilim rug cleaning.

Maintaining a kilim rug can take a little more work than a regular rug, but it's worth it. With proper care and patience, a stunning kilim rug can stand the test of time and one day even become a family heirloom.
